RESPONSIBILITY & SAFETY

Desico is a Finnish family company from the village of Fiskars. We use traditional candle making techniques and only the finest ingredients to create the best candles. We hope that our hand-made candles will bring light and colour to your selected spaces and special moments!

The wellbeing of nature and humans is the overarching principle guiding Desico’s operations. Our candles provide a clean burn, and palm oil is never used in their manufacture. All our candles are dyed using non-toxic dyes and made from vegan olive oil stearin produced in the EU and clean, premium-grade paraffin. In addition, our dyes and fragrance oils meet cosmetic quality standards.

Thanks to their perfect shape and dimensions, Desico’s candles burn evenly and do not drip wax, because the flame warms and melts the wax evenly on all sides. A premium-grade cotton wick and the cleanest ingredients guarantee an exceptionally long burn and a decent sized flame that lights up the room and does not smoke. Clean, non-toxic ingredients provide a clean burn, essential for healthy indoor air.

Our instruments are more than one hundred years old and we only use them to lift candles. Pertti Norja and Antti Toukolehto have worked at Desico for more than 40 years, and we cherish long relationships also with our other partners. Pertti and Antti make all our candles by hand.

Our workshop is located in a 19th century barn in the village of Fiskars. We are a member of a local association aiming to preserve traditional craftsmanship.

CANDLE SAFETY:

When burnt correctly, candles are not a significant fire hazard. Please read our instructions for burning candles safely and cleanly:

1. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

2. Never burn candles near materials that can easily catch fire.

3. Always use a protective, non-flammable candle holder.

OTHER INSTRUCTIONS:

Before lighting a candle, trim the wick to about 1 cm and straighten it.

Pillar candles will burn most beautifully when you burn them for about 2 h at a time. This way, the edges and sides will melt evenly and you can prevent tunnelling, i.e. burning a hole down the middle.

If you burn a candle longer, trim the wick, if necessary.

If you have a candle arrangement, keep the distance between the candles sufficient (about 15 cm) so that they do not melt each other. Candle arrangements require more care and observation. Candles in arrangements should be turned every once in a while, so that the section warmed by a neighbouring candle will change and each candle will melt evenly.

Avoid burning candles in a draught or a space with mechanical ventilation.

Do not burn candles in a place that is too hot, such as on top of a radiator or fireplace. The melting point of a candle is 54–65℃.

If the candle emits smoke or drips wax, extinguish the flame, if necessary. After the candle has cooled down, cut the edges to even them out and trim the wick to the right length. Relight the candle.

Extinguish the candle by dipping the wick into the molten candle wax. A wick trimmer is a handy tool for this purpose.

Store candles in a cool place away from light.
